NuRoof Revive shingle restoration

Shingle Rejuvenation and Roof Restoration in Ottawa

Shingle rejuvenation rebuilds flexibility in an aging asphalt roof and makes the surface hydrophobic again, so the roof keeps working instead of being replaced early. PROTEXA applies GoNano NuRoof Revive across Ottawa, and NuRoof Boost where a roof no longer scores high enough for Revive.

What is shingle rejuvenation?

Shingle rejuvenation is a liquid treatment applied over an existing asphalt shingle roof to rebuild flexibility in shingles that have dried out and reinforce their structure, so the roof lasts years longer instead of being torn off. It is maintenance on a roof that still has life in it, not a repair for a roof that has already failed.

The treatment is built from nanosilica particles. They are 40 to 60 nanometers, small enough to penetrate the material instead of forming a layer on the surface. It does three things. It makes the shingle hydrophobic, so the surface sheds water instead of soaking it up, and less water in the shingle means less water available to freeze. It reflects UV rays to limit heat absorption, slow aging and prevent discoloration. And it protects against algae and surface erosion, so dirt and organic growth get much less to hold onto.

We do not simply sell the product. We assess the surface at no charge, handle the prep, and apply the right coating on site, usually in a single day.

Why do Ottawa roofs age faster than the shingle wrapper suggests?

Ottawa attacks a roof from both ends of the calendar: summer UV dries the asphalt binder until shingles start shedding their granules, and winter freeze-thaw cycles flex shingles that have already gone brittle. Between those two, ice dams at the eaves hold meltwater against the shingle edges for weeks at a time.

That is why the symptoms show up unevenly. South and west facing slopes lose granules first because they take the most sun. North slopes stay damp longer and pick up moss and dark staining. The eaves and the first few courses above them take the ice, and spring melt is usually when a homeowner finds out what the winter did. A nano coating is applied before that damage becomes a replacement bill.

Which roof product does your roof need: NuRoof Fortify, NuRoof Revive or NuRoof Boost?

The condition of the shingles decides it, formalised as the Roof Health Score GoNano assigns your roof at the assessment. GoNano NuRoof Fortify is for a roof under 5 years old, GoNano NuRoof Revive is for an aging roof 6 to 20 years old, and GoNano NuRoof Boost is generally for roofs 15 years or older, the option for older roofs that no longer score high enough for the other two. Putting the wrong product on a roof wastes the treatment, which is why the assessment comes first.

ProductRoof ageWhat it doesLife extension
NuRoof FortifyUnder 5 yearsPenetrates and reinforces newer shingles before any wear starts, without altering the roof's appearanceUp to 20 years
NuRoof Revive6 to 20 yearsRebuilds flexibility and reinforces structure in weathered shingles, and creates a hydrophobic barrier against water, algae and surface erosionUp to 12 years
NuRoof BoostGenerally 15 years or olderFormulated with nanotechnology and renewable bio-oils, the entry tier where cost is the deciding factorUp to 10 years on a full treatment

Every one of those is an “up to” figure: it is what the treatment can buy on a roof in good enough shape to take it. They are not warranty terms, and the two should never be read as the same number. Note also the deliberate overlap at the older end, where either Revive or Boost could apply. In that window the condition of the shingles decides, not the birthday of the roof.

Be clear-eyed about the tiers. NuRoof Boost does less than NuRoof Revive on weather resistance, hail impact, UV, granule loss, wind, heat and freeze-thaw, and it rejuvenates the shingle less completely. It is the affordable option and it performs like the affordable option. If your roof still qualifies for Revive and you plan to stay in the house, Revive is the better buy.

What does NuRoof Revive restore, and what can it not repair?

NuRoof Revive penetrates deep into the shingle to rebuild flexibility and reinforce structure, and it adds up to 12 years of roof life. It does not rebuild anything that is already gone.

What it does:

  • Rebuilds flexibility in shingles that have dried out and started to curl at the corners
  • Reinforces the structure of the shingle rather than coating over it
  • Creates a hydrophobic barrier that protects against water, algae and surface erosion
  • Improves drainage by making the shingle surface shed water instead of holding it
  • Reflects UV rays to limit heat absorption, slow aging and prevent discoloration

One distinction worth making plainly, because it is easy to get backwards: granule retention is a NuRoof Fortify claim, not a NuRoof Revive one. For Revive, losing granules is one of the signs that a roof is a candidate for the treatment, not a result the treatment promises.

What it cannot do:

  • Replace shingles that are cracked through, torn off or missing
  • Stop a leak that is already running, or dry out a deck that has taken water
  • Fix failed flashing, valleys or a roof detail that was built wrong
  • Add years to a roof that has reached the end of its service life
  • Give the roof the strength of a new roof. It buys back years, it does not reset the clock

How does PROTEXA decide whether your roof qualifies?

With a free on-site roof assessment. Our team inspects the roof at no charge to verify its condition, and you get photographs of how the roof looks today whether you go ahead or not. Not every roof qualifies, and the assessment exists to say so before anyone spends money.

What the assessment is looking at:

  • How much granule coverage is left, and whether loss is even or concentrated on the sun-facing slopes
  • Whether shingles still flex or have gone brittle enough to crack when lifted
  • Curling, cupping and lifted corners, especially along the eaves that take the ice
  • Missing, cracked or slipped shingles, and how many can be handled as minor repairs
  • Flashing, valleys and penetrations, which is where most Ottawa leaks actually start
  • Moss, staining and organic growth, and how much cleaning the surface needs before coating
  • Roof pitch, storeys and access, which determine how the crew works safely

If you want to run a first pass yourself before booking, our guide to curling shingles and granule loss walks through the symptoms and what each one usually means. If the assessment says the roof is too far gone, read roof coating versus replacement in Ottawa for how that decision is made.

What happens on the day the roof is coated?

The job runs in three steps, and the coating itself is normally a single day of work.

  1. Free roof assessment. We inspect the roof, confirm its condition and provide photographs of the current state. No obligation, no charge.
  2. Prep and repair. If your roof qualifies, we take care of any necessary minor repairs and thoroughly clean the surface so the coating bonds to shingle rather than to moss and grit.
  3. Protective coating. Our team applies the treatment in one day. A GoNano treatment is a single application, not an annual maintenance product. Have the roof reassessed every 10 to 15 years to decide whether a retreatment is worthwhile.

Like any liquid-applied coating, the work needs a dry surface and settled weather, so scheduling in Ottawa follows the season rather than the calendar. We confirm the window when we book the assessment.

How many years does shingle rejuvenation add, and who issues the warranty?

NuRoof Fortify extends the life of your roof by up to 20 years, NuRoof Revive by up to 12, and a full NuRoof Boost treatment by up to 10. Where your roof lands inside those figures depends on how much shingle there was left to work with when the treatment went on, which is the strongest argument for treating a roof early rather than at the last possible moment.

The warranty term is a separate thing from the life-extension figure. GoNano issues a manufacturer's warranty of 3 to 20 years. The term depends on the Roof Health Score GoNano assigns your roof at the assessment and on the number of coats applied.

The manufacturer's warranty is only available on work done by a certified GoNano contractor, and PROTEXA is one, which is a real reason to care who is on your roof. Ask for the written terms at the assessment before you decide.

When is shingle rejuvenation the wrong choice?

If the roof is leaking now, has widespread missing or broken shingles, a soft or spongy deck, or is simply at the end of its service life, a coating is the wrong purchase and a new roof is the honest answer. We would rather tell you that at the assessment than sell you a treatment that buys nothing.

  • Active leaks or interior water damage. Water already has a path through. Find and fix the path first.
  • Deck rot or structural sag. Nothing applied to the surface addresses what is under it.
  • Shingles failing across the whole roof. Once loss is general rather than local, there is not enough shingle left for a coating to preserve.
  • A roof you are about to replace anyway. If replacement is already funded and scheduled, rejuvenation is money spent twice.
  • A flat commercial roof. These three products are asphalt shingle treatments. Flat roofs need GoNano's nano roof treatment for elastomeric membrane roofing, covered on our flat roof coating page.

What determines the price of shingle rejuvenation in Ottawa?

The roof determines it, not a rate card. The size of the roof, its pitch, the number of storeys and how safely a crew can reach every slope, the current condition of the shingles and how much granule loss there is, the cleaning and minor repairs needed before coating, and which of the three products the roof qualifies for all move the number. That is why the estimate follows the on-site visit instead of a phone call.

Our guide to what determines the cost of a roof nano coating in Ottawa goes through each factor in detail. When you are ready for a real number for your own roof, book the free on-site estimate. It is free, it carries no obligation, and you keep the photographs either way.

Common questions about shingle rejuvenation in Ottawa

Does shingle rejuvenation actually work on an old roof?

It works on a roof that is aging, not on a roof that has already failed. GoNano NuRoof Revive penetrates deep into the shingle to rebuild flexibility and reinforce structure, and creates a hydrophobic barrier that protects against water, algae and surface erosion. It adds up to 12 years of roof life. If shingles are missing or broken across the roof, the deck is soft or the roof is leaking, no coating fixes that and replacement is the right call.

How old can a roof be for shingle rejuvenation?

GoNano NuRoof Revive is for asphalt shingle roofs 6 to 20 years old, and GoNano NuRoof Boost is generally for roofs 15 years or older, the option for older roofs that no longer score high enough for Fortify or Revive. Age is only the starting point, because suitability is settled by the Roof Health Score GoNano assigns your roof at the assessment. The free on-site assessment decides whether a specific roof qualifies, since two 15 year old Ottawa roofs on different slopes can be in very different condition.

What is the difference between NuRoof Revive and NuRoof Boost?

GoNano NuRoof Revive is the restoration product for aging shingles: it penetrates deep into the shingle to rebuild flexibility and reinforce structure, and creates a hydrophobic barrier that protects against water, algae and surface erosion. It adds up to 12 years of roof life. GoNano NuRoof Boost is the entry tier, formulated with nanotechnology and renewable bio-oils, and a full treatment adds up to 10 years of functional roof life. Boost does less than Revive on weather resistance, UV, granule loss, wind, heat and freeze-thaw, and it rejuvenates the shingle less completely, so if your roof still qualifies for Revive and you plan to stay in the house, Revive is the better buy.

Will shingle rejuvenation stop a roof leak?

No. A coating is applied to a sound roof to keep it sound; it is not a leak repair. An active leak means water has already found a path through the shingles, the flashing or the deck, and that path has to be found and repaired first. Our free assessment identifies whether the roof qualifies for a coating at all before any product is quoted.

Does a rejuvenated roof still need to be replaced eventually?

Yes. Rejuvenation delays replacement, it does not cancel it. The point is to get the years the shingles still have in them instead of paying for a new roof early, and to stop the freeze-thaw and UV damage that would otherwise shorten what is left.

How long does the work take?

We apply the coating in a single day on a typical residential roof, after the surface has been cleaned and any minor repairs handled. The free on-site assessment happens first and carries no obligation.
